Ye Yong-Zhi (1985–2000) was a third-year student at Gaoshu Junior High School in Pingtung, Taiwan. Because of his gentle and feminine gender expression, he was bullied at school and had to leave class early to use the restroom to avoid classmates. On April 20, 2000, he was found dead. This event raised social awareness of gender diversity and led to the revision of the Gender Equity Education Act, earning him the nickname ‘Rose Boy.
From Nymphia to Ye Yong-Zhi, and with the annual Gender Parade in our hometown Ximending every October, we are deeply moved. It shows that the world is gradually becoming more respectful of each person’s differences.
