Reading Reflection
We read Nymphia’s story online and were impressed by how confidently she performs in drag, thanks to her mother’s support.
Nymphia’s real name is Leo Tsao. Born in Los Angeles and raised between Taipei and Hong Kong, he often looked like a girl. As a child, he was bullied for his appearance. His mother, Mimi, supported him by taking him to a child psychologist and helping him grow confidently.
From a young age, Leo loved sewing and could focus completely when doing it. At graduation, he told his mother he wanted to attend a drag party. Mimi was thrilled: seeing her shy, bullied child gain courage and confidence made her proud.
When Nymphia performs on stage, Mimi is always in the audience, clapping and cheering. She believes children create their own life experiences. As long as they are safe, parents should guide them but let them follow their own path. Mimi encourages parents to be open-minded, supportive, and give children space to grow.
This story shows how love, acceptance, and support can help a child become confident and proud of who they are.
